Editor's Note: The Time Saved Series shares the incredible stories of families and communities who when faced with the possible incarceration of a loved one -- stepped up, challenged the prosecutor, judge, and the court system -- and saved them from being caged. Through their persistence, strength, and courage they get charges dropped, stop prison sentences and deportations -- and keep their community together. From TIME SERVED to TIME SAVED - these are their stories.
We’re so proud and excited to share this story from our Participatory Defense family in Atlanta. Nikita was facing serious charges back in May of 2020. She was incarcerated pretrial for two years and was bailed out due to a huge community effort with different organizations coming to her defense - spearheaded by her 15 year old daughter Nevaeh, who took it upon herself to find support and build this coalition for her mom.
After two years of being out on bail, restricted by an ankle monitor, in April of 2024, Nikita took her case to trial and was acquitted of all charges!!! Her family, her job, a whole host of organizations and beautiful people stood strong and achieved this amazing victory and proved what is possible when we fight for our people!!!
Thank you to Metro Atlanta Participatory Defense, Barred Business, National Bail Out, OHRD (Organization for Human Rights and Democracy), & the whole community surrounding Nikita for making this possible!!! #ProtectYourPeople
